September 6th is the first day of school for New York City public school students.  Public Advocate Bill de Blasio is calling on all parents to pledge to play an active role in their child's school this year.  Here are five things that every parent should do (click here to download).

Introduce yourself to your school Parent Coordinator and Principal

  • Ask to be placed on your school's email list
  • Make sure you get his/her contact information and ask what you can do to help your school

Join your Parent Association/ Parent-Teacher Association (PA/PTA)

  • Ask your Parent Coordinator to put you in contact with the PA/PTA president
  • Attend the first meeting to find out what it’s all about

Recruit other parents to join your PA/PTA

Volunteer at your school

  • Sign up for volunteer opportunities with your Parent Coordinator or PA/PTA

Attend a Community Education Council meeting to meet your superintendent and discuss the issues facing the schools in your district
