Letter to Members of the New York City Charter Revision Commission

March 9, 2010

Charter Revision Commission

Dear Commissioners:

We commend you for taking on the important responsibility of reforming the City Charter.  We urge you to use this opportunity to meaningfully engage New Yorkers in discussions about how to make government more responsive to their needs.

A successful charter revision commission must include:

  • Frequent, open public forums in every corner of the City that encourage New Yorkers to provide their recommendations about their visions for New York and to observe the commission’s deliberative process;
  • Outreach to New Yorkers about charter revision using all available modes of communication – social networking media, civic, community and religious organizations, webcasting, video- and teleconferencing, and transcribing and posting all testimony and information about commission meetings and hearings online; and
  • Clear and concise questions and extensive public education about what voters can expect to see on the ballot on Election Day.

We are committed to working with you over the coming weeks and months to make this a reality.

Sincerely,

Bill de Blasio
Public Advocate for the City of New York

John Liu
Comptroller of the City of New York
