As part of an ongoing advocacy effort, Public Advocate de Blasio today opened a White House ‘We the People’ petition urging Administration officials to halt implementation of the Department of Homeland Security’s ‘Secure Communities’ program in New York City. De Blasio has called on the Administration to halt expansion of the program, citing its legacy of “eroding trust between immigrant communities and law enforcement.”
“This policy erodes trust between law enforcement and immigrant communities. ‘Secure Communities’ would put us all at risk by making law-abiding New Yorkers less likely to report a crime or come forward as a witness,” said Public Advocate Bill de Blasio. “We need to use every tool at our disposal to ensure this program stays out of New York.”
