“Our focus must be on repairing the frayed bond between police and the neighborhoods they serve, for the safety of our officers and for our families.

“Right-sizing Stop and Frisk is a matter of public safety. The skyrocketing number of unwarranted stops in recent years has undermined the trust and collaboration we need to fight violence. It is encouraging to see the numbers begin to come back to Earth, but we need to look beyond this one statistic to know if City Hall has truly heeded the voice of communities across the five boroughs.

“Reform does not end here. We need to use CompStat to measure not just the number of stops, but the effectiveness of Stop and Frisk tactics. We need to ensure the NYPD maintains the necessary force levels to actively police our streets. And we have to employ and expand innovative strategies like Cease-Fire to respond to surging gun violence. It will take all of these approaches to reduce crime and keep it down in the long-term.”
