Preventing Sexual Assault & Harassment
Despite improvements in a number of citywide crime statistics, New York City witnessed a rise in the number of rapes and misdemeanor sex crimes over the course of 2011. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, sexual assault is one of the most under reported crimes, with 60% still being left unreported. In 2011, the NYPD logged 1,420 incidents of rape - a nearly 18 percent jump over 2009 numbers.
