"With the federal government relentlessly trying to rewrite and erase the history of our country, it’s possibly never been more important to have an honest reckoning with our past, what we celebrate, and what it says about our values. In that spirit, today I honor Indigenous Peoples’ Day, rather than Christopher Columbus, in an effort to stand with and lift up the marginalized.
"Indigenous Peoples’ Day is not only about acknowledging the historical harm and ongoing oppression of Indigenous communities – though this recognition is essential. It has to also be about honoring the people, traditions, and heritage of Indigenous people, who are not defined solely by the tragedy inflicted upon them. Both reflection and celebration are vital.
"Today we also honor Italian-American heritage. Much of our city has been shaped by New Yorkers of Italian descent, and we see the ongoing impact of this vibrant culture and people throughout the five boroughs.
"Uniting these disparate occasions is the opportunity for conversation about our shared culture and values, how to celebrate the best of our history while opposing – not ignoring – the worst injustices. I continue to believe we have the capacity to acknowledge our past and inform our future."
