NYC PUBLIC ADVOCATE'S STATEMENT IN CELEBRATION OF KWANZAA

December 26th, 2025

"Habari Gani? Peace, love, light, and strength to all who begin Kwanzaa celebrations today.

"Throughout this holiday, we center African American heritage and culture, honoring both our ancestral and collective history.

"During Kwanzaa, we reflect on the example and learn from the model of our ancestors, carrying their legacy and strengthened by their lessons. Bolstered by the seven principles – unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith – we can confront and overcome hardship and struggle.

"With the strength that emanates from our many blessings, and the model of those who have come before, we know that like them, we will come through challenges and obstacles, making a better world for all who come after. In the spirit of Umoja, united in spirit, let us pursue justice with purpose, perseverance, and resolve toward triumph."
