"On Memorial Day, which takes origins from formerly enslaved Americans honoring fallen Union soldiers, we commemorate the sacrifice and remember the lives of all who have been killed in military service. We show our solemn appreciation for their commitment to protecting both neighbor and nation.
"This year, that remembrance comes as our nation is engaged in warfare overseas, a conflict that has taken still more lives which we lift up in remembrance today. This is a reminder, too, of the reality that we can – and I do – oppose specific military action while respecting the courage and dedication of people who step up in the spirit of service – including my own family members.
"Loss, grief, sacrifice, and trauma are universal experiences. I hope that by uplifting memories and memorials, we can find solidarity and pursue peace on this day and into the future."
