"The drop in shootings and murders in our city to date is a success to recognize, a testament to the work of all of our public safety partners. While one death is one too many, including among law enforcement, and each shooting a mark of pain for a person and community, this is a positive trend we have to work to carry forward under the incoming administration. "This progress has come despite all of the hysteria of several laws in recent years – including around the How Many Stops Act – that claimed reforming law enforcement, showing basic transparency and accountability, would harm public safety – the opposite is true. As that fearmongering has clearly been shown to be false, we need to advance to our next goal: ensuring that accountability and safety rise together, that increases in use of force does not equate to security, and that community safety comes from each of us playing our part, including not only law enforcement but many other partners. The best outcomes stem from each component of a public safety strategy focusing on where they are most effective, a collaborative approach I expect to see and am eager to join throughout the coming administration."
