"I want to wish a happy, cheerful, and bountiful Thanksgiving to all celebrating in New York City, the homeland of the Lenape people. I hope that your day and your table are full; you are able to spend time with those you hold dear; and you have a moment to reflect with gratitude and grace.
"Despite challenges and changes, our city has so much to be thankful for this past year. I am thankful for so many joining together to support, uplift, and empower our fellow New Yorkers during their time of need. I am thankful to have so many partners in the work to create a safer, more just, more affordable city where we can all grow and thrive. Personally, I am grateful for a healthy family, caring friends, and the opportunity to serve the city I love as its Public Advocate, alongside a dedicated and talented team. I strive to regard my many blessings the same way I regard this work – with humility and reverence.
"While the values of reflection, grace, and giving thanks are beautiful and honorable, the history of this holiday is not. Thanksgiving often masks a story of genocide against Indigenous peoples, imperialism, and white supremacy. I hope that while we take time to consider all that which has given us strength, joy, and support this past year, we re-dedicate ourselves to remembering and elevating the most vulnerable among us moving forward."
