Overview

Public Advocate Jumaane D. Williams marched down a street during the 2024 Labor Day parade amongst a diverse group of people wearing red shirts holding a large blue banner that says “Local 1-S” representing several NYC unionized worker groups.

The Office of New York City Public Advocate Jumaane D. Williams advocates for New Yorkers' access to various opportunities to succeed.

  1. At the Office of the New York City Public Advocate Jumaane D. Williams, our mission in the Opportunity Portfolio is to strengthen policies that reduce inequality, increase economic mobility, champion workers’ rights, and the success of small businesses.
  2. We seek a citywide vision of career equity that allows first-generation immigrants, LGBTQIA+, youth, and other underrepresented New Yorkers to earn a livable wage and high quality workforce experiences and credentials. We examine threats to the working class and unemployed. We engage and empower community members to confront institutions. We do this by driving change, informed by the people across the city, while we hold city agencies accountable by monitoring compliance with the New York City Charter.
  3. Opportunities are defined as any form of education or training that creates income and resources to care for our needs. We know that dignified work is essential for well-being and spans many definitions and categories.  Opportunities include gig work, flexible work, temporary jobs, steady employment in fulfilling careers, entrepreneurship including small businesses and vendors. In partnership, we learn from the city’s diverse and skilled community based organizations, workers unions, and more.  We work to close the opportunity gap through legislation informed by the community.
