Section 8

What is Section 8 Housing?

Section 8, also known as the Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program, provides federal funding for subsidies that help eligible low-income families rent affordable housing in a neighborhood of their choice. The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA)and New York State Homes and Community Renewal (HCR) also operate Section 8 programs in New York City. The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list is currently open for referrals only. Referrals are being accepted from June 8, 2020, until June 8, 2030.

How to report emergencies and request repairs?

NYCHA residents can call the Customer Contact Center to report emergencies and schedule routine maintenance repairs in their apartments and developments. All others first contact the property manager or owner for all emergencies, request repairs and make a complaint. If they are non-responsive, file a complaint or report a neglectful landlord through the Multifamily Housing Complaint

How to keep your section 8 subsidy?

All Section 8 tenants must recertify their income and family composition on time each year to remain eligible to receive Section 8 assistance. NYCHA tenant utilize the NYCHA Self-Certify Portal or call the Customer Contact Center. All other must contact the office of their property manager or building owner.
